Venezuela’s Public Administration to Use Open Source Software

"President Chavez issued a decree this week which says that Venezuela’s public administration will switch over to use so-called Open Source software, such as the Linux operating system, over the course of the next two years. Chavez had announced his intention to issue such a decree a few months ago."

The article also describes efforts by the Initiative for Software Choice to stop the spread of free software: "Proprietary software companies such as Microsoft Corp., have tried to stop the adoption of Open Source software by various governments around the world. Last November, the Initiative for Software Choice, a coalition backed by big industry giants such as Microsoft and Intel, sent a letter to the Director of the Office of Information Technology at the Ministry of Science and Technology, Arturo Gallegos, warning the Venezuelan government against adopting Open Source software." Part of their efforts include donation of hundreds of licences for Microsoft products to a Venezuelan Ministry according to the report.

Chavez Announces that Venezuelan State Will Switch to “Free Software”

Short report on the decision by President Chavez on using Linux in public administration. In addition "info centers" around the country, government supported internet access centers, are using free software. The goal is “national scientific independence, so that we do not depend on privately owned software. If knowledge does not have owners, then intellectual property is a trap set by neo-liberalism " Chavez has said according to the report.
